It can be difficult to admit that something isn’t working, especially when you’ve put a lot of time and hard work into it. If your website isn’t bringing in more business in a measurable way, you’ve got a problem. Here are some honest questions to ask yourself about how well your website is working:

1. Do you have a lot of visitors?
No matter what kind of counter or tracking software you use, you should be able to tell whether people are going to your site. And customers will tell you; if you haven’t heard “I found out about that on your site” lately, that’s a sign that your site isn’t effective.

What have you done to make your site valuable to visitors? If the answer is something like “it’s got nice colors and some pictures of me”, that’s a good start but needs to be better. Do you have a blog? Do you regularly provide content to the site? Be honest about what work you have really put into the site.

2. Is my website on the first page of Google results?
Search engines are the lifeblood of the internet. Unless a customer is already aware of you and your business, when they need a product or service and aren’t sure where to get it, they go right to the search engines. If their “widget” search does not list your Widget Emporium site, the site is not doing its job.

3. What is better about my competitor’s site?
Or for that matter, what is worse? Do you even know what your competitor’s website looks like? You might be able to get a lot of ideas from your competitors about what you want your site to focus on.

4. Am I willing to do the work it takes to make my site a better one?
This can be an interesting question, because the answer could be no. In that case, you might want to hire a professional to work on your site. A great website needs a little bit of work before it can reap the benefits you’d like to see.
