Websites have become an absolute necessity for almost every type and size business. If you don’t have a website, in many ways you are invisible to hundreds or even thousands of potential clients and customers.
Your website should be the hub of all your online business. It is your “silent salesman” working for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And just like meeting a prospect in person for the first time, you never get a second chance to make a first impression.
Most experts agree that you have about 10 seconds to make a favorable impression on someone arriving at your website for the first time. Either they find what they are looking for or they push the “back button” and move on to the next site.
Other than the actual content on your site, website design, layout and navigation are key to making sure your website visitor has a pleasant experience. If your website looks like it was “thrown together” you are literally shouting to your visitors that you are not professional.
Search Engine Friendly Pages
There is no point in building a website unless you can attract visitors. The biggest source of traffic for most sites are search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN (Bing). Therefore it is critical to design a search engine friendly site so the search engines, hence your prospects and customers can find you!
Major search engines use “spiders or robots” to find and index website pages to list in their search result pages. They follow links to a page, read the contents of the page and record it in their own database, pulling up the listing as people search for it.
If you want to make your site indexed easily, there are dozens of strategies that you must use, typically know as on-site or on-page search engine optimization. Your website designer should know not only how to create or build your site, but how to optimize it as well.
There are certain design elements that you may like, but search engine robots don’t. For instance you might like the use of Flash, but search engine robots can’t see/read it, they can only read text. Therefore if you are presenting important information using Flash movies and images rather than text, your search engine ranking may be negatively affected.
